New York Child Sexual Abuse Attorneys
New York State recently enacted the Child Victims Act. Prior to enacting the new law, adult survivors of childhood sexual abuse were unable to hold their abusers accountable because their claims were barred by the state’s statute of limitations. Beginning on August 14, 2019, adult survivors of childhood sex abuse have one year to file otherwise time-barred civil lawsuits against their abusers and the people, agencies, or organizations that enabled the abuse. Recently, the NY State Legislature and Governor Cuomo signed into law an extension of the window to file such claims by another year — until August 14, 2021. This is a vital opportunity for survivors of childhood sexual abuse to seek justice.
